S. Minasyan: OSCE Minsk Group may appeal to UN Security Council if situation escalates further in Karabakh zone
The use of new types of weapons on the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan and the escalation of the situation indicates approaching ‘the red line’, after which the events may take an even dangerous turn, the deputy head of Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan said at a roundtable today.
According to the political scientist, Azerbaijan has no chance to resume hostilities and achieve a quick victory so the policy carried out now by Baku is also due to the domestic political developments, while Azerbaijani’s president Ilham Aliyev has become a hostage of his own statements and actions, and there is no returning.
“Continuing to escalate the situation, Azerbaijan is trying to put pressure on the Armenian side, but the OSCE Minsk Group will not let the situation get out of control and lead to military actions. Unfortunately, as a result of all this, the number of casualties grows and there is a danger that the Armenian side will make other calculations and take concrete steps, changing the military and political situation,” Minasyan said.
In response to a question about the possibility of the OSCE Minsk Group asking the UN Security Council to pass a new resolution if tensions mount further on the line on contact, Minasyan said that if Moscow, Washington and Brussels decide that the situation is serious and gets out of control, they may resort to that step.
