Baghdasaryan: Co-chair’s statements no longer put sign of equality between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The statements of OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs and some officials of a global level no longer contain the sign of equality between the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides, the head of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia’s (RPA) faction Vahram Baghdasaryan said during a briefing today.
“If you read between the lines of statements by some political leaders and the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs, you can see that tough statements issued previously have become softer, while criticism is leveled at the Azerbaijani side. Nothing happens sharply in politics,” Baghdasaryan stressed.
He noted: “We did not predict a positive result prior to the Bern meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev, therefore what we have now is not an unexpected thing to us”.
In his words, the statements of Azerbaijani president give no reason to expect something positive.
“Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly, for years made statements calling for a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, but he broke his word. The conclusion is as follows: either the Azerbaijani president is a liar or he is not in control of the situation and the Azerbaijani army does obey the president. Otherwise such meetings would not be preceded by regular subversions and provocations. I consider it short-sighted to expect anything,” Baghdasaryan said.
Commenting on the statement of OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs that meetings of the two heads of state will continue, he said that some progress is possible in this case.
“At least, I hope that following this meeting the Azerbaijanis will take the international community’s opinion into account and will not slap the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs in the face. I think that Ilham Alieyv’s advisors should give him to understand that this may not end well. If Azerbaijani president wants to distract their own public from the tense socioeconomic situation and do it at the expense of young men’s lives, then I think that he should answer to society for this,” Baghdasaryan said.
When asked by reporters if there is an alternative to OSCE Minsk Group’s format in resolution of the Karabakh problem, the MP replied: “We should act so that by means of independent investigation commissions and cameras to record and understand who is the first to launch attacks on Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the Karabakh-Azerbaijan line of contact and who the initiator of subversive activities is”.
He said the fact that the Armenian side agreed to the introduction of an investigation mechanism, while Azerbaijan threw a tantrum says a great deal, and now it is time for international community members to issue statements.
