Political scientist Iskandaryan on two main achievements of Sargsyan-Aliyev summit in Bern
Ceasefire violations and the situation’s escalation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the line of contact between the armed forces of Karabakh and Azerbaijan are no news at all, political scientist, Director of Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan said at a press conference today.
“An increase in the number of ceasefire violations and the use of new types of weapons are no novelty. It has constantly happened in the last few years, but this time the situation is obviously related to the meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents, Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev,”: Iskandaryan stressed.
According to him, the Azerbaijani side has a national need to preserve such a situation, while the need is due to a serious economic crisis in Azerbaijan.
As regards the meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents held under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs in Bern on December 19, the expert pointed out two main facts. “The most important are the summit itself and the fact that the OSCE Minsk Group process will continue”, Iskandaryan said adding that there was no need to have other expectations from the presidential meeting.
When commenting on the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council held in Moscow yesterday, on December 21, A. Iskandaryan said: “Any changes related to the border situation should not be expected from activities of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Cooperation will remain as it is”.
