Emir Kusturica: I believe in God
World-famous Serbian filmmaker, actor and musician Emir Kusturica arrived in Yerevan on December 24 as part of the commemorative events of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Prior to a concert with The No Smoking Orchestra led by him, Emir Kusturica met with Armenian reporters.
Mr. Kusturica in particular said when answering the questions of reporters:
”My prediction is that we, the Christians, are on the brink of destruction. Present-day Europe bears evidence of the bad state of Christianity. Christians are simply subjected to torture. Migrants from Muslim countries regularly enter Europe. Of course, I have nothing against refugees, but I keep asking myself the question: Why do refugees travel a long way to reach Europe instead of going directly to Saudi Arabia, one of the richest countries. A famous French intellectual answered my question. He said they need to send one million people to Europe each year so that Europe will lose its identity. I was baptized and became Christian (Kusturica was born into a Muslim family and only a few years ago he was baptized into the Serbian Orthodox Church). It was a hard time for Christianity , but because I believe in art, I also believe in God.
As regards singer, filmmaker and writer Kusturicas, I prefer the writer.
I will definitely not ask Santa Klaus to bring me a coke because that company is gradually privatizing Santa. But I would ask him to give me supernatural power so I could keep humanity away from a war we are facing now. I would also like Maradona to get a new job.
I founded a village where I live, and my sole purpose is to return my achievements in music and cinema to people and I founded the Film and Music Festival. Most of my life has been dedicated to that festival.
Today I would say that everything is going to hell at a more rapid pace. The only way to save us is to create such a social environment where people will feel fine”.
