Bill on granting citizenship to Armenian Genocide descendants introduced in Turkish parliament
A bill on granting Turkish citizenship to descendants of people deported in 1914 was introduced in Turkey’s parliament by Turkish MP, the deputy leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Sezgin Tanrıkulu, according to haberaktuel.com.
In case of the bill’s adoption, descendants (including descendants in 4th generation) of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians who survived deportations at that time will be able to obtain Turkish citizenship.
By the bill, Turkish citizenship may be granted to citizens who lived in the territory of present-day Turkey during the massacres and deportations. The bill also applies to Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians who survived the Istanbul Pogrom of 6-7 September 1955 and their descendants.
