Four Armenians face trial over spying for Azerbaijan
Four Armenians residing in Turkey – Rafik Papoyan, Karine Ghumashyan, Sergey Papoyan and Diana Goroyan were charged in connection with being recruited by Azerbaijani intelligence agencies, Artsakhpress reported.
According to the indictment, Rafik Papoyan was recruited by an Azerbaijani intelligence agent named ‘Seyran’ who was carrying out activities in Turkey. On Seyran’s instructions, R. Papoyan performed assignments of Azerbaijani intelligence service: he selected people arriving in Turkey from Armenia who would be of interest to the Azerbaijani intelligence agency and acquaint them with Seyran.
According to the source, Rafik Papoyan residing in Turkey told his son, Sergey Papoyan, to meet with an Azerbaijani intelligence agent in Tbilisi, Georgia, and work for that agent by providing him with information he received while serving as a conscript in an intelligence unit in Martuni region of Nagorno Karabakh. Seyran paid him $750 and gave an assignment: to become a contract serviceman in a military unit in Mataghis and send information about that unit to him via the Internet.
Karine Ghumashyan was recruited by an Azerbaijani intelligence agent, ‘Arman’, in 2013. She received a payment of $1,500 and an assignment. She was told to observe secrecy and never make phone calls to Arman from Armenia or tell anyone about him.
Diana Goroyan was charged because she learned from her cousin, Karine Ghumashyan, that during her trip to Turkey, the latter received money and gifts from a man named Arman, while during a phone conversation with Karine Ghumashyan, Diana Goroyan learned that Arman is a foreign intelligence agent. Being aware of the plans of high treason, Diana Goroyan did not inform law enforcers about it.
Rafik Papoyan, Karine Ghumashyan and Sergey Papoyan have been charged under Article 299 part 1 of the Criminal Code. Diana Goroyan has been charged under Article 335 part 1. Rafik Papoyan and Karine Ghumashyan were arrested. Sergey Papoyan and Diana Goroyan were released on recognizance.
The case is being heard by general jurisdiction court of Kentron and Nork-Marash districts in Yerevan.
