Moscow Patriarchate spokesman: Stance of Russian Church on Armenian Genocide is the same
“The stance of the Russian Church on the Armenian Genocide has been clearly expressed in numerous official statements and messages of Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus Kirill. The stance of the Russian Church remains the same,” Patriarch Kirill’s spokesman Deacon Alexander Volkov was quoted by the information system of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin as saying in his comment.
“In an interview with Rossiya television channel, Patriarch Kirill spoke of the unprecedented terrible plight of Christians in Syria and Iraq in recent years. In this context Patriarch Kirill mentioned the history of the Ottoman Empire where there were periods of relative security and stability for religious minorities due to the established law and order. The absence of law and order, like in the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago and in modern-day Iraq, Syria and Libya results in tragic developments. That is why we call the modern developments genocide. The stance of our Church on the Armenian Genocide has been clearly expressed repeatedly in numerous official statements and messages of Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus Kirill.
“A striking illustration of our position is the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church at the highest level in important events of the Armeni9an Apostolic Church, the participation of His Holiness in the consecration of the Armenian Cathedral in Moscow, the visit made by a Russian delegation during the Armenian Genocide Centennial commemorations in Yerevan. The stance of the Russian Church remains the same, and we have always upheld and will continue to uphold publicly and openly that stance on international, inter-Christian and inter-regional platforms,” the comment says.
