The sixteenth meeting of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (PCC) was held on January 20-21 in Strasbourg. The delegation of Armenia’s National Assembly was composed of 7 members with Samvel Farmanyan as head of the delegation.  A joint statement was adopted as a result of two-day talks.

Bedo Demirdjian, Public Relations and Communications Officer at  European Armenian Federation for Justice & Democracy (EAFJD), also participated in the PCC sittings. During a talk with the correspondent of Panorama.am, Bedo Demirdjian said that quite efficient work was done within two days,

He pointed out two important points in the statement that says that international organizations should reconcile their resolutions and statements with moves of the OSCE Minsk Group.

According to B. Derirdjian, a point is important to the Armenians in that document that states for the first time about the need to carry out direct cooperation with Nagorno Karabakh and implement exchange programs.

Demirdjian said that in October-November of last year, EU-Armenia relations entered a new phase - after the frozen relations for 2 years, during which Armenia and the European Union specified what they can expect from each other in a situation when Armenia makes part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

“During that period the EU realized that it is impossible to completely separate the EU Eastern Partnership states from Russia, and it is impossible to freely cooperate with them without its ‘agreement’. Work is now underway at the level of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to determine how they can cooperate with EAEU. This would be a good thing for Armenia. And the atmosphere in Brussels is such that there is a need to continue cooperation in parallel with the other international obligations Armenia has assumed,” Bedo Demirdjian noted.   

The Constitutional amendments in Armenia were also discussed at the PCC meeting, in which a member of the Venice Commission participated. He said the new Constitution of Armenia is a good basis for firm legal foundations in the country.
