Draft resolutions on Karabakh are subjective and need to be rejected, PACE MPs say
During the ongoing winter session in Strasbourg, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today, on January 26, debated and voted on two anti-Armenian reports: “Escalation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and the other occupied territories of Azerbaijan” by British MP Robert Walter – a controversial report that drew a wide response, as well as “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water” by Bosnian MP Milica Markovic.
Prior to the votes, most of the political groups of the PACE spoke in favor of rejecting those draft resolutions and backing the activities of the OSCE Minks Group dealing with the Karabakh problem.
Spanish MP Jordi Xucla who had previously released a position opinion about the parliamentary election in Azerbaijan spoke on behalf of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Group. He reiterated the anti-Armenian theses of Azerbaijani propaganda.
British MP John Howell made remarks on behalf of European Conservatives Group in PACE. He hailed the efforts of OSCE Minsk Group and opposed the destructive measures regarding discussions of the Karabakh problem in PACE.
Lotta Johansson, a parliamentarian of European United Left Group, said they could not support any of the one-sided resolutions that put Armenia in an unfavorable light and praise Azerbaijan.
As was reported, PACE then voted on the two reports. The draft resolution “Escalation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and the other occupied territories of Azerbaijan” by British MP Robert Walter was rejected in a 66-77 vote. “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water” – a scandalous report prepared by Milica Markovic, MP from Bosnia and Herzegovina - was adopted by 98 votes to 71, with 40 abstentions
