Authorities and opposition jointly achieved defeat of Walter’s report in PACE: MP
Armenian Army Day held on January 28 became a really national holiday, MP Ruben Hakobyan told a press conference today when expressing his congratulations on the 24th anniversary of the formation of the Armenian armed forces.
In his words, also important is the circumstance that everyone highlights the fact that “the army belongs to the people”.
Commenting on the anti-Armenian reports voted on in the PACE a few days ago, the MP said that the Armenian side worked skillfully and managed to “neutralize Robert Walter’s report that was especially tough”.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on January 26 voted on two reports: “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water” – a scandalous report prepared by Milica Markovic, MP from Bosnia and Herzegovina - was adopted by 98 votes to 71, with 40 abstentions. Another controversial report that drew a wide response - “Escalation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and the other occupied territories of Azerbaijan” prepared by British MP Robert Walter who holds Turkish citizenship was rejected in a 66-77 vote.
According to R. Hakobyan, the Armenian side made effective use of the available resources. “The authorities, lawmakers, the opposition competently cooperated where national interests – not personal and partisan interests - were at stake. The role of the people was also great,” he noted.
Commenting on the work of the OSCE Minsk Group, Hakobyan said: “If they had worked more seriously, the second report would not have been adopted either”.
“Our delegation failed to use the following important factor: the authorities of Artsakh (Karabakh) in the person of their PM and deputy PM openly expressed a positive attitude to the fact that they along with Azerbaijan could discuss and find a solution regarding the use of Sarsang reservoir for needs of the neighboring state,” the MP explained. In his words, it is an issue of great importance in terms of propaganda.
