State-of-art regional medical center opens in Meghri
During his working visit to Syunik province today, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan attended the opening ceremony of Meghri Regional Medical Center. By a 2006 decision of the Armenian government, it was planned to merge Meghri Medical Center CJSC and Agarak Hospital CJSC and set up Meghri Regional Medical Center diversified hospital.
The correspondent of Panorama.am reported from Syunik that 1.62 billion drams for the medical center’s construction was allocated under the World Bank’s credit program on modernization of healthcare sector. The newly-built center will provide services to residents of Agarak and Meghri cities and adjacent villages. No staff reductions took place as a result of the merger of two hospitals.
The current problems are related to transport and new specialists.
Meghri and Agarak villages have no public transportation so residents without vehicles have to hire a taxi for 1,000-1,500 drams to get to the medical center.
The center’s chief cardiologist addressed the problem during a talk with Panorama.am. He said more than half of the medical personnel are from the former Agarak Hospital and have to come to work from Agarak.
