“Pepo” will be presented on the renovated stage of national theatre
The renovation of National Academic theatre after Gabriel Sundukyan is being actively conducted. It is supposed to be completed in the end of this year. This information was provided to Panorama.am by Armen Elbakyan, RA Distinguish artist, artistic director of the theatre.
He stated that currently, the theatre is working on several performances such as Gabriel Sundukyan’s “Pepo”, Aghasi Ajvazyan’s “Poloz Mukuch," Hakob Paronyan's "Honorable Beggars", Hrach Beglaryan ‘s "Artsvabuyn" on Nagorno-Karabakh war.
“Now, preparatory work is carried out, the actors are working hard on rehearsals, and the directors are being invited. These are our, Armenian directors. We could also invite Georgian ones, but there is no need. Since there is a problem of boosting the national theatre and national literature, the repertoire is based on national literature”, said Elbakyan.
He believes that Armenia can be known to the world for its national theatre, literature, and national theatrical play. “If we look closely to Armenia, we will see that it is not desert or steppe. It is a mountainous country with many stones and rocks. There is a mystery hidden behind each of these stones, rocks and mountains. I think that the theatrical art should be like I described our country.
Armen Elbakyan noted that “Pepo” will be the first performance presented in the renovated building of the theatre. Elbakyan is the director of that performance.
Earlier, in 2014, RA government decide to take loan with advantageous terms from “Erste” Austrian bank for renovating National Academic theatre after Gabriel Sundukyan. It was planned to sign a 7 million euro contract for the provision of goods and services between the RA Ministry of Culture and the Austrian consortium Vaagner-Biro with duration of 23 years. The renovation of the theatre has started in the end of 2015. While there are renovation works, the performances of the theatre are presented in State Musical Comedy Theatre after Hakob Paronyan.
