R. Babayan: Doing a good job at the expense of art is the easiest thing
“The role of the Ministry of Culture is overestimated in our country. A Ministry of Culture should not do organizational work. It should deal with the strategic issues such as designing laws, keeping a group of experts, which would be able to analyze the situation and to propose right decisions”, said Ruben Babayan, the artistic director of the State Puppet Theatre after H. Tumanyan.
He mentioned that the current mechanisms used in the theatrical sphere are outdated. Such a dynamic art like the theatre is working with the outdated rules.
“I think the more the Ministry of Culture intervenes into the different problems, the more problems we will face. There are some issues, which should be resolved by the directors of the theatres. Doing a good job at the expense of art is the easiest thing”, said Babayan.
Babayan stated that ten years have been passed since the law on theatre is being written.
“The version that I saw was a meaningless and declarative. The law should present mechanisms. That version does not present any mechanisms. We do not need just a declaration”, said Babayan.
Babayan thinks that art should be sponsored by the sponsors, not by the state. Business and art should be connected to each other.
