“Peleshyan is a hostage of eternity”
Artavazd Peleshyan, film director, RA People’s Artist, is a famous figure in the international documentary cinema. Today Peleshyan celebrates his birthday. He was born in 1938, in Gyumri.
“Artavazd Peleshyan, Armenian documentary director, is my idol”, said Reggio Godfrin, filmdirector.
“Peleshyan’s movies with their vivid aesthetic structure create a field with powerful force. He is a hostage of eternity”, said Lyudmila Donets, film critic.
In 1969, Peleshyan directed the movie titled “We” (Honorable diploma of Oberhausen International Film Festival), where the essential elements of the "spatial montage" were used for the first time. He preferred to put the important scenes far from each other. And these scenes with their sounds had a great influence on the audience.
“I don’t know how to explain it with words, but I am cutting both existing and missing images. That's why you see a new thing every time you watch my movies. Thus, the whole film is ready, but the half of it is missing. But these missing parts remain in our conscience due to the montage, music and images. If I bring an example now, its absence will disappear. That's it is about real absence'', said the master during the ''Golden Apricot'' film festival.
