PACE President to make official visit to his favorite Azerbaijan
President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will make an official visit to Azerbaijan on 29 February-1st March 2016. As the official website of the organization informed, Pedro Agramunt is due to meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Speaker of the Milli Mejlis and the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Meetings are also scheduled with the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, members of the diplomatic community and NGOs representatives.
Note, that this is Agramunt’s first international visit in his current capacity. The question therefore arises why has Agramunt chosen Azerbaijan among 47 states to visit first. Could this be a simple wish to indulge himself to a sweet nostalgia for the times he served as PACE co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan or explained by a duty to make excuses to Azerbaijani leadership following the failure of Robert Walter’s controversial report at PACE?
After the failed report it is not excluded that Agramunt may discuss with Azerbaijani leadership further plans of conspiring against Armenia.
However, even under such motives it seems quite strange that PACE President chooses Azerbaijan to visit first against the backdrop of latter’s systematic violations of principles and values advocated by PACE and CoE.
Nevertheless, one shouldn’t be surprised as the post of PACE President occupies a person who is far from the heritage left by the founding fathers of the Council of Europe, and Spanish conquistadors’ greediness seems to be more common to him.
