Expert says Syrian ceasefire will not work long
The Syrian ceasefire agreed by Russia and the United States took affect at midnight on Saturday. The UN Security Council (UNSC) unanimously endorsed the Russia-US agreement on "cessation of hostilities". The UNSC members called on the U.N. Secretary General and his special envoy to renew talks between the Syrian opposition and the government.
Turkologyst Levon Hovsepyan comments on the ceasefire agreement, says it is difficult to predict how the ceasefire will be implemented and how long it will work.
“I doubt it (the ceasefire) will last long. Political consultations are of great importance, although those could be viewed within merely tactical context. The power balance and the divide in Syria provides that the technical implementation of the ceasefire deems complicated as serious problems arise and unanswered questions remain,” the expert says.
