The School under a Lucky Star
People at school in Nalband village of Armavir region think fortunate accompanies them all along. The school became lucky when Canadian-Armenian benefactor Armen Nalbandyan decided to do a good job for the school of the village, which bears his name, provided funds and it has been a year since renovations are implemented by Hayastan All Armenian Fund. With its spacious, bright and Euro style classrooms the school will be neighbored by s new gym to be built soon right next to it.
“We didn’t intend to build a new gym, however the old one collapsed during the renovation, then we decided to build a new one.” school principal Tigran Gevorgyan told us.
This school differs from other village schools where the number of teachers and pupils is rather small. The school had 50 first-graders in 2015, and as expected, 59 will attend in 2016.
“Generally, two first-graders attend the school,” adds the school principal.
He is proud of teachers, describing them as trained, boasts that some of them obtained qualification and teach three languages at school – Russian, English and French.
The bell signaling the class breaks is not hung yet, waits for taking its place in September when the renovations are fulfilled. By that time children themselves ring the bell.
It rings after the regular class break; first-graders take their seats.
“Wish you a sun from the sky and a spring to give as a gift … ,” six-year-old Tatevik starts a poem welcoming the guests from Yerevan.
“Let me tell the sun, bring a spring to us, then wonder over the cliffs, ask for some breath and breeze,” six-year-old Aram continues pleasing the guests with a song.
Forth-graders meanwhile were engaged with marking the Mother Language Day, and twin brothers Aram and Avet were singing about Mother Armenia.

“The song is about Armenian fedayis, the Armenian soil,” Avet explains.
10-year-old Gurgen is fond of playing chess, was taught to play it as a three-year-old and now wins his family members, has a good record at district tournaments and dreams of playing chess with Aronyan.
The library at school has plenty of books but it is not open yet, need to be arranged.
Computers are set to be set up the lab later.
The librarian says children are fond of reading which have became even more popular after a reading competition was announced.
“Children partake at reading competition and take not only textbooks for that but also fiction,” the librarian tells.
The school principal assures they are happy with everything, the school “has no problem”, moreover they seem to be born under a lucky star: “Couldn’t it happen that the benefactor surname were not Nalband, funds were not provided leaving us to the state care like many other schools, standing ill-equipped, dilapidated.
