Schoolchildren join “SOS Gyumri” initiative
8 apartments and 4 houses promised to be donated to 13 Gyumri families who lost their houses after the devastating earthquake in 1988, “SOS Gyumri” Facebook page informs in a post.
The campaign was launched after photojournalist Hayk Barseghyan made photographs of about 13 poorest and homeless families in Gyumri, displaying their inhuman living conditions.
The campaign launched days ago has so far drawn the attention of ordinary people, businessman who promised to provide assistance. Charitable Foundation "Gagik Tsarukyan" announced a decision to donate two apartments to the families in need, while Executive Director at “Gazprom Armenia” Vardan Harutyunyan donated a three-room apartment.
The initiators are looking to raise £120,000 to buy 13 houses for those families and 28 00 USD have been collected so far.
As reported earlier, world-renowned singer Charles Aznavour and Rock star Serj Tankian joined the fundraiser. According to the source, “Real Madrid” football club has expressed a willingness to make a contribution as well. The organizers of the fundraiser have contacted the football club reaching an initial agreement to receive signed shirts and personal messages by the club leading players.
“The charity auction for the shirt sales is expected on March 19,” organizers inform in a Facebook post.
Furthermore, Barcelona football club emblem and signed shirts of the club’s ten stars – Messy, Iniesta, Xavi, Thierry Henry among them -are to be put on sale at the auction.
Chairman of the Board of “Asparez” Club Levon Barseghyan posted photo-shoots on his Facebook and informed that schoolchildren in Gyumri joined the fundraiser to help the homeless.
“Deeply moved seeing schoolchildren taking part in the fundraiser,” reads Barseghyan’s post.
