Minister of Agriculture: More than 50% of agricultural workers in Armenia are women
“Agriculture is one of the country’s leading areas of economy where women have a huge role. More than 50% of agricultural workers in Armenia are women who are involved in all sectors of the industry,” said the Minister of Agriculture of Armenia Sergo Karapetyan during the annual ceremony of “Female Food Hero 2016” awards.
According to the Minister, it’s through the women’s considerate work that the domestic agricultural product is of high quality and taste.
As the Information and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Agriculture reports, “Female Food Hero 2016” annual national awards ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia and Oxfam Yerevan Office. The ceremony was organized within the framework of ‘Improving Regional Food Security through National Strategies and Small Holder Production in the South Caucasus’ project financed by the EU.
Speaking about the role of cooperatives in the development of agriculture and increasing productivity, the Minister emphasized the importance of women’s cooperatives which, having small capacities provide huge results in the industry.
According to Sergo Karapetyan, the cooperative movement in Armenia has gained momentum. Now the number of active cooperatives is 272.
The awards ceremony is held in honour of women's role and achievements in food security and agricultural production within the framework of International Women's Day.
During the ceremony more than 40 female farmers involved in food production presented their products. Also testing of traditional food was organized.
Among the participants there were representatives of ministries, international and local organizations, regional and local governments, agricultural cooperatives and media.
“Female Food Hero” award ceremony launched in 2011. The aim of the project is to promote the activities of women who have achieved significant results and can contribute to sustainable community development, food and nutrition security. This year the award includes all provinces of Armenia.
At the end of the ceremony the Minister rewarded the participants with letters of gratitude and gifts.
