Maria Sharapova fails drugs test
Russian tennis player and former World number one Maria Sharapova confessed on a press conference that she failed a drugs test at the Australian open. Sharapova tested positive for meldonium, reports bigpicture.ru.
"I know that with this I face consequences and I don't want to end my career this way. I really hope to be given another chance to play this game," said Sharapova.
Sharapova said that for the past 10 years she has been taking a medicine called mildronate prescribed by her doctor. This medicine is also known as meldonium, which Sharapova wasn't aware of.
Meldonium has become prohibited since January 1, 2016. On December 22, 2015 Sharapova received a letter from Wada about the changes in the banned list. As Sharapova said, she didn't look through the list.
