Gohar Iskandaryan: Opportunities arise for Armenia, the question is how to benefit from them
After cancellation of the sanctions, Iran steps into the international economic market and becomes an active player, which means that new opportunities arise for Armenia, yet the question is whether we can benefit from them, said senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, associate professor and expert on Iran Gohar Iskandaryan during a press conference.
According to her, products from abroad always entered the Iranian market with difficulty as Iran has had a closed economy policy. Yet as the world opens to Iran, Iran in its turn should open to the world.
"It was hard for Armenian products to enter the Iranian market. According to data, Iran imported 100 types of products from Armenia, yet it exported to Armenia 600 types. Our trade volume with Iran isn’t satisfactory and at this point I notice that the two sides are conducting market study and trying to consider the main products which may be exported from Armenia to Iran and vice versa with lower interest rate which will be beneficial for both parties,” said Gohar Iskandaryan.
As far as it concerns the Meghri hydropower plant, Gohar Iskandaryan said it was a rather serious project and no obstacles hampered its implementation, yet no work has been done towards its realization.
Iskandaryan also mentioned that after the cancellation of the sanctions no drastic increase was recorded in the economy of Iran, and the IMF estimated that only next year Iran could expect economic growth. According to her, Iran should invest in the country as many other countries have been trying to invest in Iran.
The expert said that it would be preferable for Armenia to be more active in cooperation with Iran.
