Three Armenian candidates from Damascus to run for Syrian Parliamentary Elections
Three Armenian candidates from Damascus have officially nominated their candidacy for the upcoming Syrian parliamentary elections, Arevelq news portal informs, adding that the candidates are Vahe Mahshiqyan,Yerato Grigoryan and Nora Arisyan.
The report says that the Armenian community of Damascus has at least one seat in the parliament; however, works are underway to represent the community by three parliamentarians.
As reported earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad signed a decree setting April 13,2016 as the date for parliamentary elections. As of March 1 8681 candidates have nominated as candidates.
The forthcoming elections are the second since the deadly conflict flared up in Syria. Last elections were held in May 2012 with voter turnout of 51%.
The parliament of the Arab Republic has a total of 250 seats.
