Seven Armenian candidates from Aleppo to run for Syrian Parliamentary Elections
Seven Armenian candidates from Aleppo have officially nominated their candidacy for the upcoming Syrian parliamentary elections, Arevelq news portal informs, adding that the candidates are Jirayr Reisyan, Maria Gabrielyan, Raffi Avestisyan,
Tserun Gahuejyan, Harut Eortekyan, Shahe Minasyan, and Karapet Shushanyan.
According to the source, the list of the candidates was agreed with traditional Armenian parties of Aleppo.
As reported, the candidates visited the national Prelacy of Aleppo met with the leader of the Berio Diocese of Armenia Archbishop Shahan Sargsyan and received his blessing.
Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad signed a decree setting April 13,2016 as the date for parliamentary elections. As of March 1 8681 candidates have nominated as candidates.
The forthcoming elections are the second since the deadly conflict flared up in Syria. Last elections were held in May 2012 with voter turnout of 51%.
The parliament of the Arab Republic has a total of 250 seats.
