We confuse the mission of High schools, the minister says
“Something is wrong in the curriculums of High schools, a reason, which causes the complaints among the public. That reflects on the prestige of the schools in a chain reaction,” RA Minister of Education and Science Levon Mkrtchyan said at a meeting with school principals of Yerevan and Armenian provinces on March 18.
“We can not decide what curriculums to adopt in order make the High schools operate in a way as the primary ones do. As a result of this, people have an impression that the 10-year school system is preferable and they want to bring back not the10-year system itself, but the education quality remembered from that system. If we fail to address the problem of the High schools, we will not succeed in setting the general educational criteria,” the minister said.
Levon Mkrtchyan mentioned that the mission of High schools is often confused.
“The High school is not the continuation of the primary one rather that is designed to bring up a citizen out of a child capable to make decisions, be responsible. Pupils should become a citizen, a decision maker at the Bachelor’s level, while the choosing of a profession is passed to the Master’s level ”
According to Minister Mkrtchyan, pupils should have an easy schedule for the last six months of their studying at the High school in order to get prepared for entering a university. The minister also does not understand the set number of six exams to take for leaving the school.
“Is it possible to make Mathematics and Armenian language mandatory and leave one subject to pupils to choos?” the minister asked rhetorically, adding that each High school should develop its own vision and unique program of development.
