Trump offers to rethink US involvement in NATO, stop to save Ukraine
US President front-runner for the Republican Party Donald Trump declared that the United States need to be more concerned with internal problems and direct resources to restore its own infrastructure.
Trump’s comments came at a meeting with the editorial board of the Washington Post, the transcript of the meeting is posted on the paper’s website.
According to Trump, one of the problems in the US is that Washington gives too much importance to its participation in NATO; whereas the allies do nothing.
To illustrate his point of view Trump cited the situation in Ukraine, saying that Ukraine should worry the US less than any other country.
“ […] Ukraine is a country that affects us far less than it affects other countries in NATO, and yet we are doing all of the lifting, they’re not doing anything. And I say, why is it that Germany is not dealing with NATO on Ukraine? Why is it that other countries that are in the vicinity of the Ukraine not dealing with — why are we always the one that’s leading, potentially the third world war, okay, with Russia? I think the concept of NATO is good, but I do think the United States has to have some help. We are not helped,” Trump said.
According to him, the US should rapidly reduce its participation in NATO, “We just can’t afford to do it. NATO costs us a fortune. And, yes, we are defending Europe through NATO, but we spend a lot of money,” he concluded.
