Trahel Vardanyan: Armenia has average water supplies
Today, Armenia has enough (drinking) water that, if used rationally and managed correctly can also be exported to neighbour countries, said Head of Physical Geography and Hydrometeorology Department of Geography and Geology Faculty of YSU, President of Scientific-Research Centre on Water, Climatic and Recreational Resources NGO Trahel Vardanyan during a press conference.
According to him, Armenia is a country with average water supplies. As far as drinking water is concerned, the specialist said that water taken directly from the source of all the rivers can be used for drinking.
Vardanyan said that there is a lack of efficient water resource management. According to him, huge amounts of money are spent, yet this is not justified, management model should be revised. He also said that there is also incorrect legislative approach.
“We have water basins that have their owners, their managers. It’s absurd, those basins are in fact ownerless, because they have so many owners. If there aren’t so many owners, the management would be much easier. There should be a decentralization of water basins. In that case it would become easier to manage resources. Members of society and non-governmental organizations should be involved in case of decentralization. Flexible management tools are also necessary,” Vardanyan said.
The specialist also noted that there is no water resource management school and establishing one will take a long time.
