World-famous Armenian tenor Gegham Grigorian, the Art Director of the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet, People’s Artist of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Lithuania passed away, Armenian Ministry of Culture reports today rendering its condolences to his family members, relatives and friends.

The statement informs that a state commission was established for the organization of the funeral.

Grigorian was born in 1951 Yerevan.  He graduated from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, the class of People's Artist of Armenia professor Sergei Danielyan. Grigorian made his first appearance on the big stage in 1971 at 20; in 1972 he went to West Berlin to appear with solo concerts.

In 1975 he made his debut at the National Theater of Opera and Ballet of Armenia in the role of Edgar (opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" by Donizetti). This was followed by Saro (opera "Anush" by Tigranian), Tirith ("Arshak II" by Chukhajyan), Sayat Nova ("Sayat-Nova" by Harutyunyan), Count Almaviva ("The Barber of Seville" by Rossini), and Faust («Faust by Gounod.)

After ten years of abroad career Gegham Grigorian has been called one of the best tenors of the 20th century.

Gegham Grigoryan held the post of the Art Director of the Opera Theatre for 9 years then after a break was reappointed to the post in 2015 by President Sargsyan’s decision. 

Gegham Grigorian has been granted numerous awards and titles throughout his career for his dedication and services to the state.
