Government opposes to mark March 1 as Memorial Day
Government is against the initiative of marking March 1 as a day of national commemoration and protest against state terror and repression with regard to the events of March 1, 2008.
The draft law on introducing amendments in the RA law “On holidays and Memorial days” was introduced by National Assembly parliamentarians Levon Zurabyan, Stepan Demirchyan, Aram Manukyan and Gagik Jhangiryan.
Minister of Justice Arpine Hovhannisyan stated that the Government considers it necessary to take into account the provisions of the law, according to which the holidays and remembrance days are celebrated. According to her, the content of proposed regulations doesn’t comply with the provisions of the law.
“I find it necessary to stress that the draft is based on political assessments. Particularly, according to the justification of the draft ‘although the initial investigation of the killings on March 1 formally continues, in fact the proceedings are suspended and the investigative and operative measures aimed at discovering the initiators aren’t carried out’,” said Arpine Hovhannisyan.
The Government decision reads, “The draft gives political assessment to the work of state authorities, its special bodies and suggests a legal solution that in principle doesn’t correspond to the logic of the law they suggest to make amendments in."
