Russian Parliament Speaker: Turkey attempts to disrupt Syrian ceasefire
urkey is attempting to disrupt the cessation of hostilities in Syria as it pursues its own geopolitical interests in the region, the speaker of Russia's upper house of the Parliament, Federation Council, said in an interview with Ria Novosti, Sputnik agency reports.
"Attempts are being made to disrupt the ceasefire and aggravate the situation, including by Turkey, which initially pursued its own geopolitical goals in Syria and continues to target the Kurdish population, despite this being banned by existing agreements and UN Security Council resolutions," Valentina Matvienko told RIA Novosti, as quoted by the source.
To remind, On February 26 UN Security Council adopted a resolution endorsing the cessation of hostilities between parties in the Syrian conflict, except for terrorist groups. Resolution demanded that all parties taking part in the cessation of hostilities “fulfill their commitments,” which mainly includes ceasing attacks, as well as airstrikes, refraining from acquiring territory, and granting access to humanitarian aid.
According to international observers the established ceasefire Syria is largely holding, albeit with continued minor violations.
