EgyptAir hijack: Most passengers freed at Larnaca airport
Most of the passengers on board a hijacked Egyptian airliner have been freed, BBC reports referring to the airline report.
Earlier, Egyptair domestic flight Flight MS181 from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked on Tuesday and landed in Cyprus. The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reported that 55 passengers were on board and a crew of seven. The hijacking occurred in Cyprus's flight information region and the airliner was diverted to Larnaca.
The jet was taken over after a passenger said he was wearing an explosives belt. EgyptAir said. Negotiations at Larnaca airport had resulted in the release of all those on board, apart from the crew and four foreign passengers. Reports say the lone hijacker wants to talk to his estranged Cypriot wife.
He is also said to be seeking asylum, although this has not been confirmed.
