Minister: We aim to address Gilan settlement issue without violating the residents’ rights
The issue of Gilan settlement in the territory of Khosrov Forest State reserve is of particular significance, RA Minister of Nature Protection Aramayis Grigoryan said during his consultation held in Ararat Province, Nature Protection Ministry informs in a released statement.
The minister reminded that Khosrov Forest State Reserve received a European Diploma of Protected Areas from the Council of Europe and the protection regime envisaged by international requirements forbids settlement in the protected area in case it violates protection conditions.
“We aim to address the settlement issue without violating the rights of the residents. One option to the problem to suggest returning of the area to the community based on the relevant studies and calculations. In return areas corresponding to the reserve standards should be given to Khosrov Forest reserve in order to ensure the space of the specially protected areas. I personally met the local residents, learnt their problems, and think this solution will satisfy each party,” Grigoryan said.
According to the information, Minister Grigoryan suggested forming of a working group comprising Ministry of Nature Protection representatives, community leaders and representatives of the Governor’s Office. The group should present concrete proposals on the solution of Gilan settlement of the Khosrov Forest State Reserve after discussing all the relevant positions of the parties involved.
Minister Grigoryan then informed that Ministry of Nature Protection opts for promoting ecotourism in the republic and in Ararat province in particular, adding the areas provide relevant conditions.
In particular, observation posts are installed in Khor Virap to track migratory birds, which is to be reconstructed in order to attract more tourists from Europe.
