President Sargsyan says Armenia will fulfill its responsibility to protect the people of Nagorno Karabakh
President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan suggested Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work out a bilateral agreement on mutual military assistance with the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. President made the statement at the National Security Council’s session held in Yerevan on Saturday, press service of the President’s office reports.
“The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia are carrying out the action plan it has previously devised, and certain ministries, I think, should perform an enhanced service without any rush and emotions, as set by that plan,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
President then added that measures have been taken to ensure the security of the civilian populations living in the border areas.
“However, we should make a step further. I think the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should cooperate with the Foreign Ministry of Nagorno Karabakh aimed at concluding a bilateral treaty on mutual military assistance. We should draft the text of the treaty, hold relevant discussions and send it to the National Assembly. The Republic of Armenia will fully fulfill its responsibility to protect the security of the people of Nagorno Karabakh, and we have also the legal rights for that, since we are a party to the 1994 ceasefire agreement,” the President concluded.
President Sargsyan also praised the professionalism of the Defense Army of Nagorno Karabakh Republic demonstrated during the combat operations in response to the Azerbaijani large-scale offensive, saying their decisions have been “timely, necessary and correct”.
