“Large-scale offensive was launched by Azerbaijan on the Line of Contact at this exact moment because of several reasons,” said member to the RA National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, Karen Bekaryan during a press conference.

According to him, fluctuations in gas prices led to a completely different situation, especially in a country with an economy like Azerbaijan, where the whole structure if built on needles.

Bekaryan said, the new social situation raises new public commotion. According to him, for decades now, Azerbaijani public has been fed with lies that the country’s wealth is being used to equip the army preparing to conquer territories, but in a difficult social condition, it becomes complicated to make the public believe such tales.

“It’s clear that all these could leave the scope of predictability, it was necessary to take some action, so called deviation operation. But subversive groups and snipers weren’t enough, the public was used to them,” stated Bekaryan concerning the reasons for launching the offensive.

According to him, when international sanctions were withdrawn from Iran, Azerbaijan lost its importance, “Therefore, whatever was forgiven to Azerbaijan by the international community within the interests of energy security, wouldn’t be forgiven anymore”.

Bekaryan also noted, that the launch of the offensive was timed to coincide with the international corruption scandal with the President of Azerbaijan being in the centre of it. He said that the public was unlikely to tolerate the publication of the Panama papers.

Besides, Bekaryan also said that the President of Azerbaijan, never had any relation to the Karabakh war and doesn’t have any clue about military affairs. He was introduced to their new armament and decided to play the toy-soldier game he didn’t have a chance to play as a child.

According to Bekaryan there were people who could have hinted him that weapons aren’t enough and that war is unpredictable, yet those decided to remain silent not to end up as political prisoners.
