Increased number of cruel murders in Azerbaijan – consequence of propaganda of violence, professor says
In Azerbaijan, the cases when parents kill their children; brothers kill their sisters, and sons – their mothers have recently become quite frequent. People are not already surprised at suicides of school students and elderly people, Haqqin.az reports.
Azerbaijani Medical University rector and the country’s chief psychologist, professor Geray Geraybeyli, tried to explain the reasons of such aggression emerged in the Azerbaijani society and of the increased number of suicides.
In an interview with Haqqin.az, Geraybeyli noted that such phenomena as emotional depressions and stress, which result in mental disorders, have recently become widespread in Azerbaijan. He believes that time limits, constant haste, and chronic insomnia cause psychological problems.
According to the professor, the official statistics does not reflect the real state of affairs. He says that there are patients, who receive treatment in private clinics, and there are such, who do not receive treatment at all. “I believe that social factors are the reasons of most cases of depressions,” he says.
The psychologist emphasized that children have also started to be diagnosed with depression. “I encountered such case in my practice. A primary school student committed suicide by hanging. The reason was that the child had told his mother that they collected money at school. The mother shouted at the child and said she had no money. In two hours, the child hanged himself in the neighboring room. However, this is not depression, but the child’s offense at his mother’s actions. After that, the child does not think of anything, and even does not want to live,” the professor says.
When asked about the increased number of cruel murders, Geray Geraybeyli said that to some extent, it is connected with the propaganda of violence. “Nowadays, violence and aggression are propagated even in cartoons,” he says.
Recently, more and more young people have been committing suicide in Azerbaijan. Most of the cases are introduced as murders or accidents. According to child psychiatrist Narmina hajiyeva, the number of children's suicides in the country has increased by 15 times over the past 10-20 years.
In addition, psychologist Azat Isazade had earlier said that the rise of the number of suicides in Azerbaijan is connected with the increased aggression in the society, which points to its degradation in general. Besides, it was reported that the main reason of the increasing number of suicides is the worsening of the social-economic situation. In particular, there have been frequent cases of suicide in the country because of credit debts. Azerbaijani authorities do not disclose the official statistics on suicides.
