Ashot Melkonyan: Russia is our strategical rather than tactical ally
“Indeed, Russia is the strategical rather than tactical ally of Armenia. It is the tactical ally of our neighbouring country, the evidence being the enormous amounts of arms sold to that country,” said historical scientist Ashot Melkonyan during a meeting at the National Academy of Sciences.
According to him, Armenia is facing serious challenges.
“Russia has sold us weapons which make our aerial territory invincible. Yet it also sold military weapons, which we don’t possess to the adversary. It is a result of political approaches,” Melkonyan said.
He also stressed that the military-industrial complex operating in Armenia during the Soviet era needs to be restored.
“We need to restore it, otherwise if we don’t create tactical weapons and spare the lives of our soldiers on the frontline we’ll be facing serious problems. The society and the government shouldn’t spare money on arms procurement, as well as production,” said Melkonyan adding that there is a powerful strategic complex in Armenia the launch of which will allow us to resist any challenges.
