Alexander Iskandaryan: Azerbaijan has rational need to fire
Azerbaijan has a rational need to fire, because otherwise the world will forget Nagorno Karabakh conflict, as the spotlight is on Syria, Iraq and Donetsk, said political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan during a press conference.
“In other words, this is not a coincidence, and Aliyev isn’t worried because of the shootings. They just need the conflict to remain in the spotlight. Now the visits, phone calls receive the attention as no one needs a large-scale war here,” said Iskandaryan.
He added that if Azerbaijan stopped firing, the Armenian side wouldn’t either, as the latter doesn’t need to resolve the conflict through military operations.
According to Iskandaryan, the OSCE Co-Chairs, especially Russia are trying to bring the situation back to what it was before April 1, so that the firing would stop and the negotiations would resume. Yet, in the meantime, the political scientist considers this impossible.
Iskandaryan noted that the Armenian side works in different direction; diplomatically trying to influence Azerbaijan through powerful states and eliminating certain imbalance in arms.
