Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to Palmyra
Renowned conductor Valery Gergiev led a concert in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra to support the restoration of the UNESCO site and honour victims of the war on May 5, writes Russia Today.
According to the source, President of Russia, Vladimir Putin also gave a speech through a video saying that the concert is the symbol of hope of the ancient city and liberation of the modern civilization from international terrorism.
Tchaikovsky Contest laureate, violinist Pavel Milyukov, cellist Sergei Roldugin also performed during the concert.
The performance titled “Pray for Palmyra. Music revives ancient remains” commemorated those who lost their lives liberating the city from IS and backed the tremendous efforts needed to restore Palmyra’s ruined architectural gems.
Palmyra is one of six UNESCO cultural heritage sites, and has been under the control of the terrorists since May 2015.
