Armenak Urfanyan – a true legend
Everything in Armenak Urfanyan’s life remained unfinished, except his devotion to the motherland.
The night of April 1-2 was fatal for Armenak and his fellow soldiers as they took up the first fight during the military operations unleashed by Azerbaijan on the Line of Contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan. They managed to repel the enemy twice. When Armenak realized that it was impossible to resist the enemy, exceeding in number and military equipment, he decided to fight the enemy by himself, commanding the soldiers to retreat. First, they didn’t listen to him. Kyaram Sloyan, Robert Abajyan and Andranik Zohrabyan fell with their commander and others were wounded during the unequal struggle. Those wounded will long tell the legend-like reality of how the captain and his fellow soldiers fell fighting the enemy.
I’m at Urfanyan’s house with his mother. The thought-out words of comfort disappear as I want to utter them, because there are no words in any language to be able to comfort a mother who has lost her child. The mother herself doesn’t expect such words.
Mrs. Hamest told us about Armenak’s childhood, his years of service, his fellow soldiers and his girlfriend Gohar.
Armenak’s dreams of creating a family with his beloved, having their own house, becoming a high-ranking soldier remained in Martakert with him.
His mother thinks that soon Armenak will return from Martakert, will open the door with a noise, will smile with love and yarning.
Urfanyan remains in the memories of his fellow soldiers, because besides being a commander, he was a friend, an advisor and it is quite natural that the soldiers didn’t leave him to fight the enemy all by himself.
I wished to speak with Armenak’s childhood friend, but he didn’t want to talk, he wanted to escape from reality to a world where Armenak was still alive.
More will be written about Armenak Urfanyan and his fellow soldiers. They will be role models of heroism, patriotism and devotion for many. They will undoubtedly become inspiration for generations to come.
The living need this legend.
