It is necessary to get more robust varieties of apricot through selection
There are 82 genetic varieties of apricot preserved in the apricot collection orchard planted in 2012. The orchard was planted within the framework of ‘Preservation of Apricot Genetic Resources’ project.
“The orchard was planted for preservation, cultural development and passing the local apricot resources to future generations. In the meantime, it is necessary to cultivate new robust varieties through selection,” said Minister of Agriculture, Sergo Karapetyan during a briefing.
He added that best European varieties have been imported, and it is planned to create a plant nursery for implementing vaccination and selling the best varieties to the farmers.
According to the public relations department of the Ministry of Agriculture, a grapevine collection orchard has been planted, where local varieties will be cultivated.
The Minister said that there are more than 600 local grapevine varieties in Armenia, only a part of which is presented in the orchard. It is planned to create a plant nursery free from phylloxera through seedlings imported from abroad.
