Babazhanian’s statue represents features of power and a winner, sculptor says
Another wonderful and monumental statue has been added to the sights of the capital, said Defense Minister of Armenia, Seyran Ohanyan during the opening of Soviet military commander, veteran of the Second World War, and Chief Marshal of the Armoured Troops of the Soviet Union, Hamazasp Babazhanian’s bronze statue in a park on Babazhanian street in Avan administrative district, Yerevan.
“This monument is the proof that we follow our motto that ‘No one and nothing has been forgotten’. It is impossible to destroy the history, and the April War showed that our today’s soldiers follow their ancestors,” the Minister said.
President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, Head of the RA AF General Staff, Yuri Khachaturov, Mayor, Tigran Margaryan, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and foreign military attaches attended the opening ceremony.
Defense Minister, Seyran Ohanyan and the sculptor, Hamlet Matinyan and his grandson solemnly unveiled the statue.
Sculptor Hamlet Matinyan told the journalists that before working on the statue he had thoroughly studied Babazhanian’s biography.
“Babazhanian was a great man. The statue represents the features of power and a winner. I’ve tried my best to represent the brave image of the soldier. On the back of the statue I’ve carved what Tamanian division soldiers wrote in 1945 when capturing Berlin,” he said.
Architect of the statue Mikael Misakyan said that he had been working on the statue for 6 months.
