Another pantheon-style memorial unveiled in Yerevan - dedicated to Marshal Babajanian
Yerevan residents actively discuss the statue of the Hero of the USSR, Chief Marshal of the USSR armored troops Hamazasp Babajanian on social media. The statue was opened in the public square adjacent to Babajanian Street in Avan administrative district of Yerevan. People reaction is mainly negative as most consider Yerevan lacks modern city sculptures, while the newly unveiled one resembled cemetery sculpture, delivers no aesthetic delight, albeit representing an artwork.
The memorial was created by sculptor Hamlet Matinian. The sculptor earlier said Babajanyan used to be genius person. “The statue represents the might and the spirit of the victorious. I did my best to depict an image of strong warrior,” Matinian said. To remind, Michael Missakian is the architect of the memoria.
Sculptor Nune Tumanyan told Panorama.am that number of memorials have been recently erected which are either rejected or accepted with great reservations among the artists and Yerevan residents. “I would refrain from assessing the aesthetic value of the mentioned statue. I know Hamlet Matinian and consider him as a good sculptor. He is the author of number of sculptures dedicated to Armenian prominent artists erected in Vanadzor.
Over the recent years we have tended to enrich the city environment by pantheon-style memorials, though I am not inclined to criticize the hard work of a sculptor. I just insist on the idea of calling a just competition to have a result,” Tumanyan concluded.
