Level of water in Lake Sevan rises
As of May 23, the level of water at Lake Sevan stands 1900m 16cm above sea level, which is 14cm higher compared with the last year, reports Gegharkunik province administration.
According to the source the level of Lake Sevan gradually approaches the indicator of 1962, when it stood 1900m and 80cm above sea level.
The level of water started to fall during the subsequent years until the exploitation of Arpa-Sevan tunnel pipe in 1980.
“The level of water in Lake Sevan began to fall again in 1990 during the economic blockade and energy crisis in Armenia and continued until 2003. Sevan has continuously risen for more than 3.5m during the past 13 years. Through the Arpa-Sevan water pipe 1.115 million cubic meters of water flows to the Lake. The number of rivers flowing to the lake also increased. So, there are all the conditions for the lake to reach the level recorded in 1962,” said the Chief Specialist of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Department of Gegharkunik province administration.
This year, more than 58mil cubic meters of water flowed to the lake. Another 11mil cubic meters of water flowed due to groundwater sources.
