Family members of deceased servicemen receive highest state decorations awarded posthumously to modern-day heroes
The wife of Sargis Khalafyan who died on April 5 in Martakert region during the military operations unleashed by Azerbaijan on Nagorno Karabakh, told the journalists that her husband’s death only hurts. “It hurts still. As for pride... I wish they all were with us,” said Mrs. Nune.
Sargis Khalafyan had a second-degree disability, yet as his wife said, ‘it was impossible’ to hold him back from leaving for Artsakh.
Father of Kyaram Sloyan, the soldier who also died during the April War and was later beheaded by the adversary, also came to receive his son’s posthumous award.
“I’m glad my son is a hero. I have never thought about it. He was strict. Only a year after his service in the army, I learnt that he was doing well there. They were sending letters of appreciation. Three times he was granted a leave for good service. Two months were remaining for his return,” Kyalash Sloyan said.
Kyaram’s father went to the military unit where his son had served to get his things.
“They are naming the military science classroom of the school after him. His things will be moved there. They’re also unveiling his statue on May 30,” he said.
The wife of another soldier, Gegham Mkrtchyan who died during the war on April 3 in Talish, also came to receive her husband’s award.
Anush and Gegham have spent together only 6 months. Gegham never learnt he was going to be a father.
“My husband died on April 3. They kept the truth from me saying he had been seriously wounded and taken to the hospital. I learnt about his death on April 4. I was taken to the hospital then. That’s when I learnt I was pregnant. If I have a son, I’m going to name him Gegham,” Anush Hyusnunts told the journalists.
To remind, today, on the occasion of the Republic Day President Serzh Sargsyan handed to the family members of the servicemen who died in year 2016 in combat and non-combat conditions, volunteers, members of the home guard and reservists the highest state decorations which have been awarded posthumously to the modern day heroes who fell valiantly while executing their patriotic duties.
