Baku refuses to provide security guarantees to Ukraine’s Armenian boxer Gevorg Manukyan
Gevorg Manukyan – а leader of the Ukraine’s amateur boxing team and bronze medal winner of the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championshipsin the heavy weight class –will not go to Baku to participate in the international qualification tournament of the Olympic Games in Rio, which istaking place from June 16 to 26, Bigmirportal reports.
“The thing is that Manukyan has Armenian roots, that is why it is dangerous for him,” the website writes.
In its turn, Haqqin.az writes that the security of Manukyan’s trip to Azerbaijan was not guaranteed, and this is the reason why his parents and coach were also against this trip.
Haqqin.az also reminds that when the Azerbaijani president IlhamAliyev was giving GevorgManukyan the medal the latter had wonduring the European Games last summer, people in the tribunes hissed at Manukyan.
However, the president’s one gesture was enough for the crowd to start “enthusiastically”applauding the Armenian representative of Ukraine.
Commenting on the episode, Azerbaijani website Moderator.az wrote,“This case once again showcases the zombification of the Azerbaijani society, how the society in Azerbaijan can become tolerant and aggressive with a single movement of IlhamAliyev’s hand.”
According to coach D. Sosnovski, during the Baku 2015 European Games, 21-year-old GevorgManukyanmade a miracle: being in heavy psychological conditions, he could win the silver medal.
