Armenia, becoming a Regional Astronomical Centre is a serious step towards integration in the international science society, leading scientist at Byurakan Observatory and co-chairman of the Armenian Astronomical Society, head of the Regional Astronomical Centre, Areg Mikayelyan said during a press conference.
“Armenia was chosen in a competition and it’s been half a year that it’s the Reginal Astronomic Centre. Both participation in international conferences and proposed initiatives contributed to this. Creations of such centres is part of the International Astronomical Centre’s strategy. They are creating regional centres throughout the world to contribute the development of astronomy,” Mikayelyan added.
According to him, Georgia and Iran have joined the centre. Several days ago, Kazakhstan also applied in an official letter to join the Armenian Centre.
Areg Mikayelyan also said that the centres are coordinated on professional, educational and public levels. “Armenia will bear this title until 2021. Afterwards, there are plans to continue [our mission] until 2030”.
Being a small village, Byurakan has been included in 10 great places of the world since the Soviet Era, where most official and international astronomical conferences are held. Byurakan has been mentioned along cities such as Paris, Prague and Rio.
