RA Foreign Ministry comments on Global Slavery Index 2016
According to Andrew Forrest’s Global Slavery Index 2016 , 14 100 people (0.47% of the population) in Armenia live in modern slavery.
RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Panorama.am that representatives of Walk Free Foundation never visited Armenia for their research and never cooperated with state institutions or civil organizations operating in the field.
“Thus it’s not clear what methods or research tools they used to make assumptions about Armenia,” FM responded.
From the Ministry they stressed that the preliminary study on Armenia shows that the organization didn’t carry out in-depth interviews for their research.
“In addition, according to the US State Department annual report on human trafficking, Armenia has been classified in the first group third year in a row, which means that Armenia is one of the countries successfully fighting against human trafficking. Particularly, 31 out of 188 countries were classified in the first group in the US State Department report. Armenia is the only country from the region and among the CIS countries included in the first group,” representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia stated.
According to the study, there are an estimated 45.8 million people living in slavery. Almost 60% of the world's slaves are in five countries: China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan.
