Sarmen Baghdasyan: 17-20 thousand Armenians still live in Syria
“Armenia’s Foreign Ministry presented a report about the problems the Syrian Armenians face barely several months ago. Unfortunately, no positive changes have been recorded in Syria since then, and efforts by the international community have produced no result so far,” Sarmen Baghdasaryan, Head of Middle East Department at Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated at interdepartmental committee session devoted to the problems of the Syrian Armenians.
Mr. Baghdasayan informed that one third of the Syrian territory is controlled by opposition forces and terrorist groups. According to the UN data, about 18 million people live today in Syria, while 7 million displaced. Over the course of the past 5 years Syria’s economic losses exceeded $USD 250 milliard.
As to the Armenian community in Syria, Baghdasaryan informed that about 17-20 thousand Armenians still remain in Syria, yet the number varies due to the population move in the period of the school holidays in summer.
“We witnessed a dangerous situation in the Armenian neighborhoods of Aleppo, which resulted in seven deaths. Armenian educational, civilian and historical buildings were significantly damaged in the recent attacks. Today we observe an influx of migration of the Syrian-Armenians to Lebanon, Armenia as well as Australia,” Baghdasaryan said.
