Viticulture and winemaking foundation to be created in Armenia
During the government session on June 23, it was decided to create a viticulture and winemaking foundation in Armenia to encourage the state policy in the fields and implement development programs.
Minister of Agriculture of Armenia, Sergo Karabetyan noted that the decision was made in order to further consolidate the achievements in viticulture and winemaking based on the need to ensure progress.
According to the minister, due to the various and large-scale projects implemented during the past few years in the field of alcohol production, a noticeable recovery of grape production and development of winemaking have been recorded.
However, the minister also noted that according to last year’s research, it turned out that unions registered in the field in Armenia aren’t able to implement joint policy aimed at the development of the sector. Besides, they haven’t found effective ways to improve the production quality, expand the product range, develop its joint Armenian brand and increase its popularity. “All these are the main factors contributing to the growth of the sales, therefore the further growth of the sector too”.
It is proposed to build a viticulture and winemaking institution with financial means to contribute the solution of current problems in the sector, reflecting its interests. It will operate on the principle of cooperation between the state and the private sector and will provide the production of high quality and internationally competitive product.
Prime Minister, Hovik Abrahamyan said that he has serious expectations concerning the foundation. “The quality of wine gets better and better and a drinking culture is developed. I believe we should take serious steps to have better results. For example, in Georgia the foundation succeeded. About 25 million bottles of wine were exported from Georgia in five months. That’s why we need to invest all our efforts to make a progress in winemaking”.
