Pope Francis: This Genocide has been a human calamity of the XX century
Pope Francis has used the term Genocide in his speech today at Ra President’s Office referring to the Armenian Genocide. “This tragedy, this genocide has been a human calamity of the XX century which was committed based on racial and religious motives, it was an act of a hangman which had an ultimate aim of annihilating an entire nation,” His Holiness Pope Francis stated at the reception attended by the RA authorities, representatives of the Armenian society, and diplomatic corps accredited in Armenia.
CNN reporter Dellia Galagher, meanwhile, tweeted that Pope went off the prepared text. “Pope goes off text and refers to Armenian "genocide," reads the post on Twitter.
Reuters agency quoted the Pope speech as well, saying “Francis used the Armenian term 'Metz Yeghern', but then added to his prepared text "that genocide" to refer to what he also called "the first of the deplorable series of catastrophes of the past century".
The agency details that there was no immediate reaction from Turkey, which last year promptly recalled its ambassador to the Vatican after the pope used the 'genocide' term.
