Turkish media covers Pope’s visit to Armenia
The centre of attention for international media is the Pope’s visit to Armenia. The Turkish media has also been actively covering this event, mainly mentioning about Pope’s telegram to Erdogan, the fact of Pope Francis using the word ‘genocide’ in his speech and reminding that last year on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Pope used the word for the first time.
Turkish media also reminds about the diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Vatican.
It is stressed that Pope Francis once again used the word ‘genocide’ and stood for the ‘Armenian claims’.
Sabah news agency labels Pope’s speech scandalous, mentioning the fact that Pope Francis changed his speech and described the events of 1915 as a ‘genocide’.
Hürriyet also stresses that the initial text of the speech didn’t include the word ‘genocide’, yet the Pope changed it at the last minute. The news agency also mentions Vatican spokesperson, F. Lombardi’s words that “they don’t want to enter a political trap by using the word ‘genocide’”.
News agencies, like Sondakika and Yeni Şafak also stress the fact of Pope using the word ‘genocide’.
Other agencies note that flying over Turkey on his way to Armenia, Pope Francis sent his blessings to Turkey and its president.
